Lucifer and Satan the Devil

There are so many myths and misconceptions about Lucifer/Satan that it is very unusual to hear anything that even remotely rings of the truth. The fact is, very few people know what the Bible says about him, and have relied on Hollywood (of all things) or on popular novels for their information; yikes! So...what do you really know about Satan the Devil? Do you know that he is truly your enemy and is actively working against you for his own aims?

Most of the images of Satan that people of the western world carry around in their minds, came to them through artistic representations of biblical stories and characters, and not the Bible directly. This is not good, as it is only the Bible that reveals to us an accurate image of Satan. To that end I find it almost incredulous that the very body that had been entrusted with the spreading of the truth about Satan, (as seen only in the Bible), locked up the Bible in a dead language and would put to death anyone that even tried to make the Bible available to the common people. I am speaking of the leaders of the historical "church" of the late middle ages, AKA: the church at Sardis, of which the Bible says...To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

Revelation 3:1. These "church" leaders kept the Bible hidden away from the people and proved themselves to be ministers of Satan, and that is why the above passage says that they are only rumored to be alive, but are in fact dead. They only revealed to the people harmless kindergartenish images, depicted through paintings, sculpture, stained glass artwork and fairy tail legends, keeping the truth about Satan/Lucifer hidden from the people and consequently from themselves too. Hiding the Bible serves only the Devil, for the Bible tells us what Satan is trying to do and why. "Forewarned is forearmed," as the saying goes. The Bible is What We Must Know revealed to us by God. Read it and understand.

In the past Satan was able to hide the Bible from the people because people are generally lazy and like things in tiny easy to understand packages. Having to work hard for knowledge is something that most people don't like to do. I have had people write to me at SeekersTrove.com and complain that my articles are too long. They don't like having to think and search and look and knock for the truth. ("Now open your mouth and close your eyes, and daddy will give you a big surprise!") The people of our past allowed their "leaders" to keep the secrets of the kingdom to themselves. They were too lazy to read the Bible for themselves and allowed their leaders to read it for them. Now, things are different my friend. Now you can read the Bible again. Now you can be informed about what is going on in the world today, and where the world is going. But, beware my friend, many people are still lazy. They still let others read the Bible for them, (that's a bit like letting someone else eat the chocolate cake for you ;-). To let someone else read the Bible for you is like being on a spaceship and letting someone else, (possibly your enemy), play with the life support controls; better you make sure things are right for yourself.

Have you ever seen one of those Picture Bibles? They present the Bible stories in a comic book style, that is, the major elements are pictorially represented in hand drawn first person imagery. I looked through one some years ago and it made me laugh. I was looking through one of the Gospels and I saw all of the Pharisees and Sadducees with frowney unhappy faces and evil eyes, and Jesus and his disciples all had happy smiley faces with twinkling eyes. Oh if only things were that simple! Beware my friend of the candy-coated version. Beware too of the Verse-A-Day "God's Promises to you" booklets.

Much of what is "known" today about Satan came to us through these "Picture Bibles" of the past, (AKA: stained glass, paintings etc.) so is it any wonder that what we "know" is mostly the stuff of comic book depictions? The picture of Satan as a red ugly looking man with horns and a trident is pure cartoon. We need to get real, and learn for ourselves from the true source of accurate information, that is we must learn the meaning behind the images. A death sentence no longer hangs over the head of anyone in possession of a Bible written in his or her own language; at least for much of the world this is true. My friend, you have been given the most valuable thing that you could EVER be given; the Truth. Take hold of it and consume it.

Matthew 11:12

From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. Jesus Christ (NIV84)

Be a forceful person; resist the accepted flow; grab hold of Jesus and don't let go until he has told you everything. You might wonder if God will really answer your questions? The answer to this is most definitely yes. But, you have to ask.

Matthew 7:7-8

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Jesus Christ (NIV84)

Let go of your childish notions of biblical topics, those cartoonish views of things, and move on to reality. My friend, whether or not you know, or believe it, your life, and/or death, is tied to the Bible. The Bible is God-Made-Visible for you. But, he is only visible if you read it.

I want us to look closely at the Bible to see what it really says, then we can come to an understanding as to what the images in the Bible really mean. It is very important to know your enemy and to have accurate information regarding him. Knowledge of ones enemy is called intelligence. Be a wise combatant and listen to your intelligence briefing. Be knowledgeable and be forewarned; be intelligent.

Before we get started with this topic of Lucifer/Satan I want you to understand that I don't have all of the answers, (no one does), and the Bible says not to go beyond what is written; meaning that if the Bible doesn't say something then don't look to other sources. The only reliable source you have concerning spiritual matters is the Bible, and every other source is suspect. Spiritually speaking I, and you, are legally blind. We both depend upon the help of a reliable witness to tell us what is what. Jesus, that is, the Word of God, is that witness, and he has told us what we need to know. If it's not in the Bible then we don't need to know it--period.

Lucifer/Satan: Spirit Being & Angel

The first thing to know about Satan is that he is a spirit being and not a human being, and has never been a human being. Satan is an angel. When he was created his name was Lucifer, but now it is Satan, (I'll explain why later). You probably already knew that Lucifer/Satan is/was an angel but I have to say the simple things first, so that you and I are on the same page, so to say. Now, did you know that Lucifer/Satan was a cherub? or cherubim if you prefer.

Lucifer was a Cherub

Now you might be wondering what a cherub is. Well a cherub is NOT a cute baby-looking angel with wings that shoots love-arrows at people, as traditional contemporary depictions indicate. Lucifer was a cherub. I don't know exactly what a cherub is, but I know that a cherub is an important angel--whatever that means. Let's look into this; shall we?

Ezekiel 28:12-15

Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says:
'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.

14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. (NIV84)

Satan: The King of Tyre

This passage is talking about Lucifer/Satan. It calls him a "guardian cherub", and the "king of Tyre". The "king of Tyre" just means that Satan is the power behind the man called the "ruler of Tyre" found earlier in the text.

Ezekiel 28:1-2 (earlier in the text)
The word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says:" 'In the pride of your heart you say, "I am a god; I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas."
But you are a man and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god. (NIV84)

In these two passages we see two different beings. In Ezekiel 28:1-2 we see the "ruler of Tyre" and in Ezekiel 28:12-15 we see "the king of Tyre". They are not the same person. It is not possible that the "ruler of Tyre" is an angel because it specifically says that he is a man. And in the second case it is not possible that "the king of Tyre" is a man, because it says specifically that he was a guardian cherub, (that is, an order of angel). So, because of the context we can see that Ezekiel 28:12-15 is talking about Lucifer/Satan, and the earlier part of Ezekiel twenty-eight is talking about the human ruler of Tyre.

We can see from this twenty-eighth chapter of Ezekiel that the Bible hides what it says in very interesting ways. Many of the main characters in the Bible have several if not many different names. Satan is also called, O Morning Star, son of the Dawn (Isaiah 14:12 NIV), which is translated Lucifer in the King James Version; here in Ezekiel he is called the king of Tyre; the serpent in Genesis chapter three; the god of this age in 2 Corinthians 4:4; and by other names in other places in the Bible. My point is that you must read the Bible with wisdom and discernment, but taking care not to read into it things that it does not say.

When Lucifer was created he was created a guardian cherub. I am not sure what a guardian cherub is, but I can see that Lucifer was no ordinary angel, if ordinary can be applied to an angel. This passage (Ezekiel) says that Lucifer was the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. Wow! what a testimony. No one ever called me the model of perfection. How about you? Can that be said of you? My point is that maybe your understanding of Lucifer/Satan has been a bit off, as it is with almost everyone.

If you read through the relevant portions of the Old Testament you will see that within the Holy of Holies, in both the Tabernacle of Moses (Exodus 25:17-22), and in Solomon's Temple (1 Kings 6:23-35), statues of cherubim guarded the Ark of the Covenant, which is the most holy of the Temple's contents, and this tells us that Lucifer was of the type of angel that watches over access to God. Lucifer was a pretty important angel. The Bible says six times that while on earth God sits enthroned between the cherubim. It seems to me that the rank of cherub must be very high indeed.

"Lucifer Was His Name O"

Let us take a better look at the name Lucifer.

Lucifer

1966 heylel {yay-lale'}
from 1984 (in the sense of brightness); TWOT - 499a; n m
AV - Lucifer 1; 1
Lucifer = "light-bearer"
1) shining one, morning star, Lucifer
1a) of the king of Babylon and Satan (fig.)
2) (TWOT) 'Helel' describing the king of Babylon
Enhanced Strong's Lexicon, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1995.

The name Lucifer is sometimes translated "light-bearer" or "bright morning star." This is a very good name to have.

If you step back and look at some of the Bible's symbolic imagery you can see that the sun is symbolic for God the Father, and the moon is symbolic for Jesus, the Son of God, and the angels are represented by the stars. (This is expanded in my paper titled, "The Sun, Moon, & Stars".) This representation imagery is why Lucifer is sometimes translated The Bright Morning Star. The meaning of the word "star" is not actually in the name Lucifer, but rather it is because he is an angel that he was called the bright morning star, bright coming from the name Lucifer and star because he is an angel.

There is another symbolic picture in the Bible that helps explain Lucifer's name and that is the idea that the earth is now experiencing night, and when the day comes, God's children will all be in heaven, that is, Earth=Night and Heaven=Day.

Romans 13:11-14

The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. (NIV84)

This "Heaven=Day" imagery works quite nicely with the image of the sun and moon that I had just mentioned. Jesus is our image of the sunlight while we live on the earth, that is, at night. We see at night by the light of the moon. The moon does not have any light of its own, but rather reflects the sun's light onto the dark earth. See how nicely that all fits together with what we know about Jesus?

Well, Lucifer is called the bright morning star, or light-bearer, which tells us that he was intended to bring in the dawn of heaven, so to say. Lucifer was the model of perfection and the image of truth.

Lucifer Broke Faith with God

Ezekiel 28:17

Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. (NIV84)

There it is! the dreaded "P" word. There is no word worse than the dreaded "P" word. The dreaded "P" word is "pride" or "proud" if you prefer. (It is rumored that when the secret agents of God go on covert operations into enemy territory they bring along a suicide capsule filled with a small dose of pride just in case they get captured by the enemy. ;-)

Joking aside there is nothing more deadly to the human heart than pride. The world doses up on pride thinking it's the cat's meow. Self-help seminars, self-expression workshops, pride in your work, proud to be an American, take pride in your appearance, proud of your car/truck; the list is truly endless. Pride is the most toxic substance in both creations--Heaven and the Earth.

Proverbs 6:16-19

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (KJV)

Did you see what tops the list? Seven things that are an abomination to the Lord and "pride" takes the cake. We just saw in the Scriptures that Lucifer became proud because of his beauty and splendor, and because of his pride he broke the faith relationship with God.

God made Lucifer extra special beautiful and wise, and this filled him with pride, and because of pride he thought himself above God's rule. (I wonder if you know anyone that thinks that what they think is more important than what the Bible says.) Lucifer had a reason to be proud, but not before God. He was much more beautiful and wise than either you or I, but what is that to God? God is infinitely more beautiful and wise than Satan and all of us put together!

Isaiah 14:12-14

How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! (O Lucifer, son of the morning. (KJV)

You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! 13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; 14 I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." (NIV84)

Notice that this passage tells us HOW Lucifer fell from heaven. We see here the effect of the pride revealed to us in Ezekiel chapter twenty-eight. This pride deceived Lucifer into thinking that he needn't remain subservient to God. Lucifer thought that he was sufficient unto himself for determining what was good for him. Boy! I wish I had a nickel for everyone that thought that. ;-) Because Lucifer believed this he was given the name of Satan, because that is the meaning of the name Satan.

The Name Satan Means...

Satan

7854 satan {saw-tawn'}
from 7853; TWOT - 2252a; n m
AV - Satan 19, adversary 7, withstand 1; 27
1) adversary, one who withstands
1a) adversary (in general - personal or national)
2) superhuman adversary
2a) Satan (as noun pr)

Enhanced Strong's Lexicon, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1995.

The name Satan means "One Who Withstands" which means, A person that thinks that they know better than God does. (Pride does make one foolish.)

I think that before I talk anymore about Satan I must first say something about the Nature of God, that is, The Way It Is in Heaven. This is vitally important because if we are to understand that Satan is the One Who Withstands, it is necessary to know what he is withstanding.

God should never be thought of as being separate from Heaven. Heaven is not a place like San Francisco where God may or may not be found. Heaven and God are so intimately connected, so as to be one and the same. An earthly example that you can easily understand would be you and your physical body. So long as you live on the earth, you and your body, are one and the same, that is, where your body is, so too are you. God and Heaven are even tighter than that. The thing that makes Heaven, Heaven, is God. If you were to find a place where God is not, then you would be in Hell, or The Lake of Burning Fire. What makes Hell bad, is that God is not there!

This brings us to the question of what is Heaven like. Heaven is like God. Pretty simple--Yes? So what is God like?

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (NIV84)

To say, the fruit of the Spirit is... is the same as saying, "God is like..." To be connected to God means that these qualities grow within you. To be disconnected from God means that these same qualities wither and die. To be in God, or Heaven, means that the nature of God lives inside of you. To be spiritually dead means that God's nature is dead in you and your nature is the only nature left. God's nature sustains. Without God your nature will decompose like all dead things do.

Here is a humorous analogy but true: If you take the smartest man (or woman) in the world and remove his (smart) brain, what you end up with is nothing. If you take the most beautiful and wisest being and remove him (or her) from God, you also have nothing. That is just the nature of things.

Lucifer thought that he could withstand God, and he became Satan, that is, the Withstander. The only thing wrong with my above analogy is that when you remove the brain from a smart person the effect is immediate. In the case of a Withstander the effect takes some time to run its course. Lucifer/Satan is decreasing in his "beautiful" fruit. In fact, he is no longer beautiful at all. He is now the poster boy for corruption, or using the Bible's verbiage we can say that he is now the model of corruption.

Let me show you a Scripture that tells us this.

Ezekiel 28:16-19

Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.

18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching.

19 All the nations who knew you are appalled at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.' (NIV84)

All of the angels in heaven can now see and understand what happens to a person that withstands God. They are appalled. Before spiritual death happened they could not truly understand, but now they can. They will never repeat Lucifer's error. And we of the earth that have knowledge can also see what withstanding the will of God brings, and we too are appalled. If we have an ounce of brains we will not continue down the path that destroyed Lucifer.

Satan is Now the Model of Corruption

Satan is called the god of this age in 2 Corinthians 4:4, and in the Gospel of Luke Satan said this to Jesus...

Luke 4:5-7

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship me, it will all be yours. (NIV84)

Satan was at that time the king that ruled over the kingdoms of mankind; remember his name, the king of Tyre? That is why he could say to Jesus, I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. Satan said this to Jesus and it had to be true because unless the offer was genuine there would have been no temptation in it for Jesus. Anyway, what I want you to see, and understand, is that Satan is the force behind earthly kingdoms (other than Israel).

Now, because of its length I am not going to include the entire chapter of Daniel two here, but I would like you to read the chapter when you have the time, and to understand that the image that Daniel saw was a picture of Satan and his kingdoms.

What I want you to see is that at the beginning the ruler is...

Daniel 2:37-38

The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory; in your hands he has placed mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds of the air. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all. 38 You are that head of gold. (NIV84)

This passage was spoken to King Nebuchadnezzar but is also referring to Satan, the true ruler of the kingdom. (Remember my friend, the "ruler of Tyre" and the "king of Tyre" we saw in Ezekiel 28?) Satan starts out with power, and might, and glory and is represented by gold, the most precious symbolic metal of ancient times.

As time progresses...

Daniel 2:39

After you, another kingdom will rise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth. (NIV84)

Notice that as time goes on he becomes inferior and harder, that is instead of gold he is represented by silver and then by bronze. Satan is becoming less and less noble and more and more cruel.

Daniel 2:40

Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron--for iron breaks and smashes everything--and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others. (NIV84)

Satan's degeneration continued until he is represented with iron, the least noble and hardest of all biblical metals. By the end he is represented with iron mixed with clay--a most ignoble substance.

My point in showing you this is to show you that a person that is disconnected from God corrupts over time into an ever uglier and crueler person, additionally that person's wisdom diminishes as well. This is the unstoppable effect of sin, or said another way, this is the fruit of death, that is, spiritual separation from God. Without God's sustaining power of love, corruption is inevitable. This is a Spiritual Law of the highest magnitude.

To summarize this about Lucifer/Satan we can say that he was a model of perfection until pride caused him to think himself equal with God, and so because he broke the faith relationship with God, Satan is in an unredeemable downward spiral of corruption. This is the fate of anyone who withstands God. God does not really destroy those that oppose him, but rather, they decompose because they are no longer connected to the source of life, that is, they are dead, (and we all know what happens to one who is dead). For more information on this please read my paper, What is Sin?.

Satan is the Leader of the Rebellion

It is kind of funny that in the world today, that is, in Satan's world, the label of "Rebel Leader" is generally thought of in a positive context. Look at the film series Star Wars with all of the film's heroes being members of the rebel faction. They are all righteous fighters fighting against the evil empire. But, remember my friend to keep the fantasy of the films separate from the reality of God's Word. This theme of the underdog fighting and overcoming the entrenched power is one of Hollywood's most popular, and persuasive, themes. And yet it is directly opposed to God's instruction.

Romans 13:1-2

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. (NIV84)

My friend, I don't care, even in the slightest, if the government is doing something wrong, or is unjust (by your estimation), you are NOT to oppose the legally established government! God put it there. You are to fight the evil that is within you only.

Revelation 22:11

Let him who does wrong continue to do wrong; let him who is vile continue to be vile; let him who does right continue to do right; and let him who is holy continue to be holy. (NIV84)

Consider carefully what these words mean.

If a people are faithless before God, and God puts an oppressive government over them, so that they might suffer, and repent, what is that to you? God wants to save those people. If you fight the government then you are fighting God. Don't you realize that Satan is loose in the world to show us the fruit of rebellion? Without Satan to stir things up we would never see enough to learn in our lifetime. Do not withstand what God has ordained.

Revelation 12:3-4, 9

Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. 4 His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth...
...9 The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. (NIV84)

We see here that Satan is the red dragon that leads the rebellion. This by the way, is why Satan is often portrayed as being red. Notice too that the stars represent angels here and that a full third of the angels rebelled with Satan.

Everyone that sides with the Rebel Leader will be destroyed along with him. Take care. Rebellion takes on many forms, and a great many people are guilty of it. Satan is a liar and has deceived many people with his talk of justice and oppression and his Politically Correct boloney. Justice and freedom can only come to those that have placed themselves as Christ's servants. If being a servant of Christ is repulsive to you then I don't know what to say. I have heard the foolish say many times, "I would rather rule in Hell than serve in Heaven." Such folly! No one rules in Hell. That's the whole point. Rebels are there. They rebel. All rebels are servants of sin. Sin rules over them and oppresses them. Only those that willfully serve God are truly free, of sin.

AKA: (Also Known As)

The Prince of Darkness

As far as I know the Bible never calls Satan the Prince of Darkness, but it is nonetheless a reasonably good name for him. When we think of the image spoken of earlier of the sun representing God the Father, we can better understand why Satan might be called the prince of darkness. When Lucifer rebelled and withstood God's word, he abandoned Light and fell into darkness, that is, he abandoned the source of truth and is now living a lie. To be in God's presence is to be in the presence of Light, that is, the truth; to break fellowship with God is to be away from the Light, that is, to be in the darkness, so "darkness" describes Satan's lot very well.

But, here I have called Satan the prince of darkness. The prince in the title means that he is some sort of leader among those that are separated from the Light, that is, God, and that is what he is.

For prince in the case of Satan, we can use the definition of chief or ruler, as the literal English definition of prince, that is, the son of the king would not be right. Among those that rebelled, Satan is their ruler.

Enhanced Strong's Lexicon, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1995.

Beelzebub: Which means, Lord of the Flies, is an appropriate name for Satan as he is the lord of those that are dead spiritually, in other words he is the Lord of those that don't matter, that is, lord of the flies.

You can read about this name in Matthew 12:24-27, Mark 3:20-30, and in Luke 11:14-20. In this passage people that opposed Jesus said that he drove out demons because he was their prince, but Jesus pointed out that this was wrong, it was Satan that was the lord of the flies and not him.

The Father of Lies

John 8:44

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (NIV84)

Here Jesus says that Satan is "the father of lies" and that his natural speech is to speak a lie. Satan will not so much as blink an eye when he tells you a lie. I reckon that this might just be the biggest difference between Jesus and Satan. Jesus will always tell you the truth and Satan will tell you what serves him best.

Satan's Modus Operandi (How Satan Operates)

The next name is a name that speaks of Satan's primary method of operation, (modus operandi). He is frequently called the devil.

Enhanced Strong's Lexicon, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1995.

In my opinion the best and most accurate meaning of the name "Devil" is "Finger Pointer." How tempting it is, when we are being accused, to point the finger at someone else; as though that makes any difference with respect to ourselves. Please bear with me as I tell a little story that illustrates the meaning of devil a bit better.

There was a man that had two sons. The eldest was obedient to his father and loved him very much. The younger son was a wild son and considered his father's instructions as so much noise.
One night the boys went secretly to town and partied late into the night.
In the morning the father, having heard the boys come in, confronted the younger son about his late night excursion.
The younger son admitted to breaking the house rules, but then pointed to the elder son and said; He went too.
The eldest son bowed his head and admitted his transgression and asked his father to forgive him.

That is how a finger pointer works. He doesn't own up to his own disobedience, but rather seeks to deflect responsibility to someone else. That is the meaning of 'devil.'

It is easy to vilify Satan and point your finger at him and say that you aren't as bad as he is, but how does that help you? My friend it is a common tactic to vilify the enemy to justify your own actions, to convince yourself of your own moral superiority, but such a tactic is of no value when dealing with God. God is dealing with you. You must own up to your deeds and if the need arises then you must repent and ask God's forgiveness.

Tell Them What They Want to Hear

Genesis 3:1-6

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'"
4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (NIV84)

This is a very curious passage, and very enlightening too. We see in the previous chapter... And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.'

Genesis 2:16-17 (NIV84). So God told the man not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, (the tree clearly being a metaphor). What we see is that God gave man a direct order, which was simple and could not be misunderstood. God is saying that if the man would remain "the child under his father's care" that all would be taken care of by the man's father. This relationship between the man (Adam) and his father (God) is very similar to the relationship between any very young human child and his father or mother. Within a godly home the mother and father provide every good thing for their young children, but if the children were to 'run away' and live in the streets by their own wits, well those children's lives would soon become a living hell. A young human child can't protect himself or herself from the evil that exists out there. Well this is exactly the situation that adult humans are in with respect to the spiritual world. This is why God warned the man not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In a way God told the man not to break away from him and 'run away' to live on his own. God told him this, not to limit him, but rather because he loved him and wanted what was best for him. But, Satan told the woman what she wanted to hear, that is, he told them that they would not die, but rather that they would become like God, knowing good and evil.

What young child doesn't want to grow up to be like his or her parents? What young child doesn't want to know the truth? My friend, the Devil will always point out to you what you want. Don't you want a lot of money? Don't you want to be respected and/or honored? Don't you want to be valued? or be beautiful/handsome? keep your job? or whatever! Satan's most effective tactic is to tell you what you want to hear, and tell you that you deserve it. And remember that Satan has no qualms about lying to you. You will not surely die, Satan lied. Satan told them that they would know the truth about good and evil, like God does, and so they would be like God; lie and truth, blended together in a way that sounds like something very desirable.

Satan's overall strategy is to separate you from your faith relationship with God. If he can separate you from God then you fall under his control. He has the spiritual vision that works and you don't, so it is easy for him to manipulate you, if you aren't connected to the Source of Truth.

1 Corinthians 13:12

Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. (NIV84)

Now we see poorly, but Satan does not. Now please understand that I am talking about spiritual matters here. Spiritually we see very poorly now, but as the above Scripture says, after the Lord's return, and we are in heaven with him, then we will see fully and clearly.

Have you ever noticed that those that 'party hardy' want you to join them in their wild living, so that you aren't a testimony of their transgression? Those that are disobedient want to entice you into disobedience too, so that they can point their finger at you, and they won't feel so guilty. Satan hopes to avoid God's punishment by hiding behind God's children.

Pride: Satan's Tool of Death

This warning is a very close cousin of the, "Tell them what they want to hear," warning. Remember that it was pride that lead to Lucifer's fall. Pride is the most deadly toxin of all. The mightier you are the more susceptible you are to pride's deceitful poison.

1 Chronicles 21:1-7

Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, "Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are."
3 But Joab replied, "May the LORD multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord's subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?"
4 The king's word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king's command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel. (NIV84)

God had been with David in everything that he did for Israel. David was undefeatable in the field of battle, because God was with him. But here we see that Satan worked on David's pride and made him think that David won his victories because of the size and quality of his fighting force. David, whose pride had been solely in God, was lead into an evil behavior in that he put his pride on Israel. This act of David's resulted in a strong judgment against Israel which David (rightly so) judged himself the guilty party of.

Another example:

Luke 18:9-14

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: 10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
14 "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. (NIV84)

Pride killed Lucifer. Pride is the sin that brought all of Job's woes to bear. Pride brought about the downfall of countless people. Pride in one's county; pride in one's military; pride in one's sport team; pride in your intelligence; pride in your good looks; whatever your pride is in is very dangerous. The only pride that is good is pride in God. Beware of any other type of pride. Pride is a killer.

Fear: Satan's Backup Plan

Matthew 14:25-31

During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
29 "Come," he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt? (NIV84)

This story is all about fear and its effect on faith. There are many other examples of Satan bringing something frightening to cause a man to stumble in his faith. You must Take courage! and not succumb to fear. In this story Peter knew that if the night water walker was the Lord Jesus then if the Lord said for him to walk on the water too, that he would be able to do so. Peter had it right. Whatever the Lord says for you to do carries with it the power to do it. That is faith; faith in the word of the Lord. Peter had faith in Jesus' word. But, Peter then took his mind off of this fact, and started looking at the wind, that is, the choppy waves, and then he doubted the word of the Lord. Fear is the Faith Killer.

Recap:

Satan will tell you what you want to hear.
Satan will flatter you and lead you into thinking that you deserve more that what God is giving you, that is, stroke your self-pride.
Satan will try to frighten you away from faith.

Satan's Attempt to Divert Jesus from His Walk of Faith

Matthew chapter four verses one through eleven record the temptations that Satan used in his attempt to cause Jesus to break faith with God. This was Satan's strategy and these temptations are examples of his tactics.

Matthew 4:1-3

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. (NIV84)

You can bet that after not eating for forty days that Jesus was hungry and his body wanted something to eat. Satan tempted Jesus by suggesting that he turn some stones to bread. The thing is, God did not tell Jesus to command the stones to become bread. God lead Jesus to fast and pray. The stones-into-bread idea was Satan's. The temptation was because Jesus was hungry, but Jesus knew what was truly important; obedience to what God desires.

Matthew 4:4

Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' (NIV84)

Jesus had not been given 'magical powers' to be used for his own benefit. Jesus was the Lord God Almighty's servant. Jesus' duty to God was to obey him fully and receive from God what God supplied. What Jesus said here (actually he quoted Deuteronomy 8:3) is probably the most important single Scripture in the Bible regarding your earthly walk. Jesus is saying that what is our life is our obedience to whatever God says. This is the very thing that Satan stopped doing. Satan had said, I shall do such and such, and Jesus said, God said for me to do this and that. Satan the Withstander and Jesus the Obedient, are appropriate names for each.

John 12:49-50

For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say. (NIV84)

John 14:10-11

Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. (NIV84)

This connection of the Father in Jesus and Jesus in the Father is the same as what is present in all of those that belong to God. Jesus' words were the Father's words. Jesus' deeds were the Father's deeds. If we belong to God then we are in Christ (Christian) and we too become an extension of God. To become obedient Children of God we must follow the example that was laid down for us by Jesus who is God-Made-Visible to us. Jesus showed us the way. That is why I am showing you this section from Matthew's Gospel. Jesus is showing us the right way of avoiding Satan's temptations.

Matthew 4:5-7

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written:"
'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' (NIV84)

This is Satan's second attempt to suggest to Jesus that he was not the Son of God. In a way Satan is telling Jesus to do something to prove that he is in fact the one and only Son of God. Satan is suggesting to Jesus that God's word will not work for him. Satan is attempting to goad Jesus into putting God to the test. In a way, Satan is saying, you say that the Scriptures are true, then throw yourself off this high place and see if God will do what he said he would do. Prove to me that God is with you.

To put God to the test is a faithless act. Jesus had faith in God. To test God would mean that he had broken faith with God. So, again, Jesus quotes Scripture, showing us the right way to avoid temptation. The Bible tells us to have faith in God and not to put him to the test.

Matthew 4:8-11

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."
10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. (NIV84)

Look at that temptation! How many men would have fallen for that one? Think about it. Satan offered Jesus all that the world has to offer, and Jesus told him to get lost. What Jesus is saying here is that obedience to God is worth more than everything that the world has to offer.

1 John 2:17

The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. (NIV84)

Mark 8:36

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? (NIV84)

It is important to see that each time Jesus was tempted he responded with Scripture, (actually all three quotes are from the same book--Deuteronomy). This is how we are to respond to Satan's temptations. Had the man and the woman in the Garden of Eden responded to Satan's temptations in the same way, then none of the curse of sin would have come upon them. In fact all of the pain, suffering, disease and death that has come to those that live on the earth came because of a failure to obey what God said. All of it!

You, my friend, live by your obedience to God's words. Nothing else can save you. Nothing else can supply anything that you need. Obedience is everything. Disobedience is death. Please look at this next passage.

James 4:7-10

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (NIV84)

"Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. The word "flee" here doesn't mean that he will go away, it means that he will run away from you. If you belong to God then Satan has NO authority over you--none! Satan knows this and so if you resist him and draw near to God, God will defend you and Satan is totally afraid of God. Satan had no authority over Jesus either, but that didn't stop him from tempting Jesus. Satan can tempt you too, but you can resist him also. Resist and be victorious.

Conclusion

Satan really doesn't have very many tricks in his bag. If you understand how he works and why he does what he does, it isn't that hard to avoid the pitfalls. Pride led Satan to withstand God's will and his word.

Satan looked to within himself for answers. He will lead others into this same error. There are countless self-help philosophies, self-improvement methods, and self-examination methodologies; all of which have nothing to do with faith in God. Beware of all such methods.

The root of Satan's error was that he didn't have faith in God's love for him, and so he doubted God's good will, and sought to protect himself in faithlessness. In this Satan acted foolishly.

1 John 4:7-8

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (NIV84)

My friend, you must never doubt God's love for you. Every command that God has ever given to a man has been for that man's good. There have been no exceptions to this. Love has your interest at heart.

The way it is, is this: God knows everything. There is nothing that God cannot do. God is all-powerful, all knowing, and all good, and he is completely just. God truly loves all that love him. Every thought and intention God directs to those that love him is for that person's good. Know this. Have faith in this. Have faith in God.

Do not listen to the Fallen One when he leads you into faithless actions. He just wants others to be in the same boat as he is. Satan does not love you. Satan doesn't care about you in the slightest. He wants you to worship him, and he wants you to adore him. He wants these things from you for his sake, because he doesn't love you. God wants you to love Him, because he does love you. It might look the same to you, but if you think about it a bit you will see the difference.

One friend might love you and risk your love with a timely rebuke, another might flatter you so that you will like them; which is the more valuable friend? One friend might go into harms way and be killed because of his love for you, another might send you into harms way because they fear their own harm; which is the more valuable friend? God, who instructs you to save your life, or Satan who flatters you so that you might worship him; which is the one that loves you?

Lucifer measured himself by himself. Lucifer looked at himself and saw beauty and wisdom, and was fooled into thinking that he was the reason for this beauty and wisdom. My friend, humble yourself. Look at yourself and ask yourself if you have the wisdom and knowledge to create a world like God did. Compare your beauty and wisdom, not with yourself, but rather with God. Which of the two of you are qualified to be Father? What is the wise thing to do for a son or daughter? Do the wise thing. Listen to your Father and obey. Don't listen to the withstander.
