Spiritual Fulfillment

"I have a secret
Nannie, nannie, nannie"
Sung to the traditional children's taunt

Okay, so my childish chant is a bit of a joke. I'm a pretty goofy guy when you get to know me. But, I do have a secret; in fact many secrets that I have received the understanding of from God and I want to impart some of these secrets to you.

I have set a lofty goal for this paper. I intend to tell you some of the secrets of the universe, that is, those with respect to attaining spiritual fulfillment. Now that is a pretty lofty statement; don't you think?

Now, do you really imagine that something so extremely valuable would be just lying around? I mean "secrets of the universe" stuff is not found published in the newspapers; now are they? Important secrets are kept hidden from those that should not see them, and yet are made available to those that are on the inside and must know them. Now, isn't that the way things work? Yes, I believe that it is. A secret by definition is hidden information, at least hidden from some people anyway. I am going to tell you just how you can unlock some of these most important secrets.

Did you know that organizations such as the Masons have secrets that they keep from the populace at large and that those secrets are called mysteries? Well, I have a hidden mystery that I will share with you. But remember now, it is hidden. It is hidden in plain sight. I didn't hide it and I can't unhide it. I can point it out to you. I can put my finger right on it and say "Look! There it is!" but I can't "de-cloak" it (a bit of Star Trek lingo there). I don't have the power to "de-cloak" anything. In fact I don't have the power to do almost anything. I'm just a guide. I've been shown some of the mysteries of the universe, and I can point them out to anyone that I choose, but I cannot uncover them.

You, my friend, have to do something yourself before you can see what I'll show you. I can't do it for you, and for the most part I can safely say that God won't do it for you. You must do it. You must want it. You must look for it. What you MUST do is believe what God says. Please think about this, and don't go running off thinking "Oh please, now he is going to talk about God!" If I tell you the secrets of the universe and you don't believe me, then the secrets remain hidden from you. Right? Can you see that? Oh, how I hope that you will think about what I've just said. Think on it, and taste if it isn't true. If I tell you anything that you don't believe, then what I told you remains closed to you. How can it be any other way?

I saw a movie years ago about a family that was hiding from the Nazis. There was a hidden door on the floor, which was covered with a rug, and the dinning room table was placed over the rug. Nazis entered the house looking for the hidden family. They were questioning the people that lived there, and then the Nazi leader (probably a colonel; the bad guys are always a colonel), had a flash of insight. He very nicely asked the little girl of the house, if this hidden family of question lived there, and she said yes. He was filled with the pride of accomplishment, thinking that he had outwitted the adults. He then asked the little girl where the hidden family was, and she meekly said that they were under the table. Well, this colonel was filled with triumph and whipped the long hanging tablecloth away and quickly looked under the table, only to find nothing. He was humiliated in the eyes of his men because he was fooled by a little girl, and stormed out of the house. The family was in truth hidden under the table, under the trap door, but Colonel Bad Guy never believed long enough to find them.

Matthew 13:3-9

Then he (Jesus) told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop--a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 He who has ears, let him hear. (NIV84)

Now the seeds in this parable are the hidden secrets of spiritual fulfillment that I have been talking about. Jesus has spread the seeds of spiritual fulfillment out onto the field of the earth, that is, they are in the Bible and in the mouths of people like me. The following is Jesus' explanation of the above parable.

Matthew 13:18-23

Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. (NIV84)

In the story of the Nazis above we see that at first the colonel believed what was said, and so he was not like the first group in Jesus' parable, that is the seeds that fell along the path. The Colonel believed and then he pulled up the tablecloth and looked, but then the truth wasn't so easy to find, and he was humiliated because things weren't exactly like he thought they were. Because he was a shallow man having no root he gave up at the first obstacle and he never found his prize. Well, my friend, I'm almost exactly like the little girl in the story of the Nazis. I am of no importance, but I will tell you where the secret is hidden. If you look and see, and if you don't give up because things aren't exactly like you thought that they'd be, then you'll find the answers you seek.

Secret Number One:

There are two realities. One is called the Universe and the other is called Heaven. They are both real. But, they do not both exist in the same reality. One could never build a craft and travel from one to the other. There is a joke that I have heard that truly applies here. "You can't get there from here." This statement that is intended to be a joke is the truth when thinking of the universe and heaven. Neither is a place that could be traveled to from the other. Modern science fiction writers have expanded our ability to understand such things, so that you my friend are fortunate in that you now have the vocabulary with which I can describe these things. Peoples of the past couldn't adequately understand the idea of "parallel universes" as we can today, thanks to those science fiction writers.

heaven: 2. The abode of the Deity and of the blessed dead.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Fifth Edition, G. & C. Merriam Co., Publishers, 1944

universe: All created things viewed as constituting one system or whole; the creation; the cosmos.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Fifth Edition, G. & C. Merriam Co., Publishers, 1944

The Universe is made up of everything that is made out of energy and/or atoms. Spirit beings or heavenly things are not made out of energy or atoms. I don't know what they are made out of, but I do know that heavenly stuff is not made up out of energy and/or atoms.

Hebrews 12:25-29

See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens." 27 The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken--that is, created things--so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our "God is a consuming fire. (NIV84)

Here in this passage we see a difference between earth and heaven; the created things that can be shaken, and the heavenly things that cannot. This passage is a little vague, but if you look carefully at it you can see that it is telling us that the Universe is a temporary place, and heaven is eternal. This passage is advising us to listen to the witness from heaven because heaven endures and the earth does not. This is very good advice.

Secret Number Two:

There are two kinds of life. There is natural life and quite separately spiritual life. Natural life is what we call living things on the earth, or in the universe, if you will.

life: The quality or character distinguishing an animal or a plant from inorganic or from dead organic bodies, which is especially manifested by metabolism, growth, reproduction, and internal powers of adaptation to environment.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Fifth Edition, G. & C. Merriam Co., Publishers, 1944

This is a pretty good definition of natural life or physical life.

The second kind of life is a bit harder to define.

life: (spiritual) The state of being whereby a spirit being is connected to God by the bond of faith. To be one with God is to be spiritually alive; to be separated from God is to be spiritually dead. God is the source of spiritual life and is its sustaining power.

Mark Heaney's definition of spiritual life, 2003

The definition of spiritual life is a little like the life of a single cell within your body. Each cell is alive, but only so long as the body as a whole is alive. If the cell is removed from the body then it will die, because its life is sustained by the body.

The origin of these two kinds of life is quite different. Natural life is born or is an offshoot of something that is already alive, so to say. Most animals join their genes through some form of union and create an offspring. Plants in a way do essentially the same thing, but they form a seed which when planted grows into a plant that is more-or-less like the parent plants. Life in heaven is not like this. God directly creates all life in heaven. There is no reproduction in heaven.

Death in the universe is very different than death in heaven and it is very similar. Please bear with me as I describe to you what death is. What I am going to tell you might seem like it is old news, but none of the angels understood this mystery until after the universe was created and they could see things played out. When a person dies here on earth they are removed from the community of the living and they decompose in their place of exile. That is a simple definition and you might think that my wording is weird, but I am trying to lay the groundwork for an understanding of spiritual death. When a spiritual being 'dies' they are removed from the community of the living and they are exiled to a place where sin consumes them. In a way it is very similar. The thing that must be understood is that the spiritual person doesn't stop being a person at death. It is their relationship with the living that is forever changed. Relationships are the MOST important things in your life--period. My friend, I don't want you to miss this most important secret--your relationships are life and death to you. This is a KEY. It unlocks so much that I could call it a Master key.

Secret Number Three:

Mankind is unique in both realities in that man is both a natural creature and a spirit being too. Man is a hybrid.

hybrid: Anything of heterogeneous origin or composition. 1. Of, pertaining to, or of the nature of, a hybrid. 2. Derived from unlike sources.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Fifth Edition, G. & C. Merriam Co., Publishers, 1944

All of the beings in heaven (like angels) are spirit beings, and all of the creatures in the universe are creatures of matter. Man is a being that is a hybrid of both realities. Man is an animal, and he (or she) is a spirit being too. Only man can have both types of life. Man's body can be monitored and tested by physical means, but his inner spirit nature cannot, because that nature is not of this universe. Man calls his spirit nature the subconscious.

Proverbs 4:23

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. (NIV84)

The heart is the Bible's word for our subconscious mind or our spirit self, that is, the home for our soul. Psychiatrists have long known that the forces that drive a human are located within the subconscious mind not knowing that the subconscious is the spirit being within a man.

The important thing to know, and it is of monumental importance, is that you ARE a SPIRIT being, and for now you live temporarily in the body of an animal. This is a BIG spiritual secret that is hidden within the Bible. The importance of understanding this point cannot be overstated. Your very life hinges upon your understanding the true nature of your being. What could be more important for you to understand than that? You should also consider the fact that spirit beings are eternal, that is, they never return to dust, so to say. You will exist FOREVER as a spirit being even though your body will return to the earth. This is a supremely important secret. The understanding of this secret will reprioritize everything in your life.

Secret Number Four:

This secret is the most amazing. If you have any practical and correct knowledge of God then you will be totally blown away by the understanding of this secret. As a human being you are, that is your spirit nature is, created in the image and likeness of God.

Genesis 1:26-27

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (NIV84)

I don't believe it is possible for us to understand the fullness of this fact while we still live in the body. You my dear reader were created, or born if you will, as God's very own child. Yikes! Talk about the life changing implications to finding out that you are say the just-acknowledged child of the richest and most powerful man in the world. Even that revelation wouldn't even come close to the truth. YOU, my dear reader were created in the image and likeness of the Creator of the Universe. Wow! Now this is talking about your inner nature. Your body means nothing. Your body is no more important than some clothes that you might put on in the morning; clothes to be discarded when they are no longer useful. But your inner person is permanent. Your inner person is able to be adopted right into God's very own family, and once adopted you will be heir to everything that belongs to God. Zowie! Can you think of anything that is even remotely as important to you as that? I think not.

I recently watched a Richard Pryor movie titled Brewster's Millions, in which Mr. Pryor would inherit $300 million dollars if he could spend $30 million dollars in 30 days leaving no assets. The story played out as a comedy in that it was very difficult for Mr. Pryor to spend all that money in such a short time. The screenplay was very creative in his methods. Now, I mention this movie as an illustration of just how much a person might be willing to do in order to inherit a fortune. The key to this is the same as I mentioned before. You must first BELIEVE that you stand to inherit before you will re-prioritize your life in order to inherit. If you don't believe it then everything else is moot.

Well, the Bible is a legal document that names YOU heir of Jesus Christ, if you will acknowledge before all men that you are his heir, and that you acknowledge your status as God's obedient and loving child. The trick here, if you can call it a trick, is that God isn't going to give you any physical proof of your status to show your friends and acquaintances. You have to take God at his word. Most likely your friends and relatives are going to think that you are both gullible and foolish. You are going to have to stand against all of the peer pressure and remain fixed to God. And it is likely that you will have to stand alone. This standing alone against all worldly reason is harder than it sounds, but if you maintain your new status as heir of Jesus Christ in the face of all pressure then you stand to inherit everything. You have God's word on that. And this brings us to the second trick, if you can call it a trick, and that is that for you to take God at his word, you, yourself, must be a person of impeccable integrity, that is, your word must be absolute or you will not have the faith to believe in God's word. The Bible is a gentleman's agreement between the two parties. God is kind of tricky in that he links your faith to your integrity. This is God's way of keeping undesirables out of heaven. In short, if a person can't be trusted then they will not have the ability to trust others--the two are linked together. This is also a form of poetic justice, if a person truly and honestly repents then they become worthy of God. God is giving you this chance.

You might wonder at my statement saying that the Bible is a legal document. It is exactly that. The Bible is a contract between two parties, God, and anyone that will meet the conditions of the agreement. Just to make things clear I must also say that the Bible is NOT a law book, that is, it is not a book of rules that you must obey. People that have made it out to be such have missed the whole point.

Secret Number Five:

Your faithfulness in the body with other people is directly connected to your faith relationship with God.

1 John 4:20-21

If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother. (NIV84)

This verse reveals a spiritual law. This is true whether or not you acknowledge it, understand it, or like it. Your faithfulness in your human relationships is mirrored in your relationship with God and vice-versa. If your relationships with people are faithless then so is your connection to God Almighty, or should I say your lack of a relationship, for a relationship with God is PURELY one of faith, (or faithfulness, if you prefer.)

I hope that you can see that this is all very simple stuff. The secrets of God are all very easy to understand and conform to. It is only a matter of knowing them and believing that they are true, and living up to them.

"Multiple Personality Disorder", (Secret Six):

As a human you have two voices that pull at you. You have the voice of your body and the voice of God. You, that is your spirit, is sort of in the middle.

Today, we call the voice of the body our Natural Human Instincts. And we call the voice of God, the Spirit, or the Holy Spirit. The New International Version of the Holy Bible calls the natural human instincts the "sinful nature," which in my opinion obscures the truth a bit. The King James Version isn't much better with the "flesh," and "carnal mind." Let's look at some examples.

Romans 8:5-8

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. (NIV84)

Romans 8:5-8

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. (KJV)

Romans 8:5-8

Those people that live by the dictates of their natural human instincts have their minds set on the things that the body wants. But those people that listen to God have their minds set on what God wants for them. The mind that listens to their natural human instincts ends in death, but the mind that listens to God will find life and peace; the mind that listens to the body is against God. It does not do the things that God requires and it is not able to do them. Those that listen to their natural human instincts cannot by doing so ever please God or obtain spiritual fulfillment. Paraphrased by Mark Heaney

So, my point here is that man is pulled in two opposing directions within his own self. The body pulls one way and the spirit pulls the other. This sets up for a real problem in that while we live in these human bodies the body's voice is very loud and demanding, but it is the spirit within the man that is you. God's voice is very soft. He gently woos, while the body outrageously flirts.

1 Kings 19:11-13

The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by."

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. (NIV84)

The voice of God in our ears is like a gentle whisper. Now, my friend, contrast that with the lusty drives of the body and it is no wonder that usually the body wins out. Oh, my friend you must not take the easy path. The path of self-gratification is always the easiest path at the beginning. This is why drug abuse is so prevalent today. People perceive the emptiness within them and seek to fill it with chemical means. But, drugs can never fill the spirit within you with satisfaction. Drugs are the easy path that always leads to destruction. Drugs and sex are 99% the same thing. Drugs are a way of artificially obtaining the chemical high of sex. Oh, there are some differences, granted, but the differences are only superficial. Deep down within you, within what science calls your subconscious mind, you are empty and seeking to be filled. But this emptiness cannot be filled with superficial sexual relationships, or with drugs, or with money, or with power trips over people. The things of the "natural human instincts" will lead you to spiritual death, as we have seen the Bible warn us.

Romans 8:9-17

You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. (NIV84)

Secret Number Seven:

The Bible is not written to everyone. It is written only to those that will listen. The promises that it contains are only for those that will believe and receive them. The above passage Romans 8:9-17 is only true for those that believe in the contract that God has made between them. If you don't really believe in the contract then none of the promises apply to you. I say this because there are a great many people that have read the Bible and think that the promises are for them and so they think that they are going to heaven and that everything is all right, but in fact they don't even know God in the slightest.

Deuteronomy 29:19-20

When such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way." This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. 20 The LORD will never be willing to forgive him; his wrath and zeal will burn against that man. All the curses written in this book will fall upon him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven. (NIV84)

This is a pretty scary passage. The person that it speaks of, thinks that all is okay. That person has been deceived. That person doesn't think that they must be a person of great integrity and honor. He, or she, has read the promises of God, and claims them for themselves, but those promises are not for that person. Those promises are for those that will meet the conditions of the agreement.

Galatians 6:7-8

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, (remember: human instinct) from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. (NIV84)

That said, I would like to paraphrase Romans 8:9-17.

Romans 8:9-17

You who truly listen to and obey God are not controlled by your natural human instincts, but by what God instructs you to do. If Christ's Spirit doesn't really live inside of you and act as your teacher then you are not really a Christian at all. But, if Christ's Spirit does live inside of you and teaches you, then even though your body is destined to die you are not. And if the Spirit of Life, who raised Jesus from death to life, lives inside of you, then you can be assured that he will give that which is dead in you life.

Because God did this for you, you have an obligation to live in the way that God directs you to, and you must not listen to the voice of your natural human instincts. If you ignore what God tells you and instead live to appease the desires of your human instincts then you will die the eternal death; but if you instead listen to God's instructions and completely ignore the demands of your body then you will live, because those that listen to God are truly his children. For you did not receive a spirit that enslaves you, but rather a Spirit that makes you God's child, and by this Spirit we cry out to our "Dad". The Spirit that we have received from God confirms that we are truly God's very own children. Now, if we are God's very own children then we have become heirs of all that belongs to God along with Jesus our elder brother. If we are asked to give up worldly pleasures, like Christ did, it is so that we can share in the bounty that belongs to Jesus Christ. Paraphrased by Mark Heaney

My friend, if you think that the Bible is not a practical book, you're wrong. The above passage tells you exactly what is going on for real. This is a very practical instruction. Those people that hate the things of God, that is, goodness, kindness, patience, self-control, gentleness, love, peace, joy, and faithfulness, the Bible will remain forever a secret, or mystery if you prefer. The key that unlocks the mystery of the Bible is the willingness to become the man or woman that God wants you to become. Now, I am NOT talking about becoming a "good Christian" and a churchgoer. I am talking about you becoming the sort of person that God would want to walk in the garden with, the sort of person God would want to talk with.

What brought this paper into existence was my dismay when I recently watched the new film 40 Days and 40 Nights. I understood that younger people generally liked that movie so I thought that I might watch it and see what it was about. I only watched thirty minutes of the film, so I don't know if it got better but what I saw disturbed me. If what I heard concerning the popularity of this movie with young people is true then I am concerned for our generation of young adults.

In the way that the Bible is written for those that seek to be pleasing to God, that movie was written for those that couldn't care less about pleasing God. Practically speaking, 40 Days and 40 Nights is an anti-Bible. If you live by the example presented, then you will surely be lost. It saddens me that such films are made at all. My friend, you are in a life and death battle. If you refuse to listen to God's instruction then you are fighting the battle with your eyes closed. What chance is there in you winning the battle with your eyes closed? You are a SPIRIT being FIRST, and the battle that I am talking about is a spiritual battle. Oh, you can live to please the body, and so you can share the fate of the body, but it doesn't have to be that way.

I know that there are now, and there has been, about a Brazilian people that claim to be God's children, but in truth his children have always been pretty rare. I, myself, don't fit into the "Christian community" either. I am an outcast too. I hate religion and I don't belong to any denomination of so-called Christian thought. I do love the Truth though. I do love the Lord. I do love the Bible and its teachings. If you, my friend, have read this paper all the way to the end then you must see that I am different than what you have seen before. I am different. A person MUST be different if they are going to please God.

My friend, consider joining me in my search for the Truth. It is a lonely road and very few are those that are on the road that leads to heaven, but the fact that few are on it doesn't mean that it is worth whatever the cost, and that doesn't mean that God will not accept you. If your desire is to please God, then God's desire is for you. But please don't think that I want you to become a church person. I couldn't care less if you go to church. I want you to actively search out God in the Bible and to actively become the worthy person that God wants you to be. You see my friend I work directly for the Lord. My desire is to please him only. I call a spade a spade and so eventually I seem to offend most everyone, but the Lord is the only one that concerns me. I fervently hope that I don't offend him.

God is a being of integrity, honesty, reliability, justice and goodness. He wants you to be like him. If your relationships are about you, then you are missing the whole point of your life. God intended that you be one with him. That is accomplished through a relationship with Him. This is a relationship of faith and commitment. A relationship with him is mirrored by your relationships with other people. You CANNOT be a faithful person to God and be unfaithful with other people. You just can't. If your relationships with other people are purely physical then you don't know anything about God.

If you understand being totally faithful toward your mate then you can begin to understand what a relationship with God is about. God is faithful. Nothing can make him be unfaithful toward you. You are the one that must become faithful, and you are the one that must remain faithful--come good times and come bad times. 'Till death do you part!'
