Spiritualism

In the world today there is much skepticism regarding spiritual disciplines. Because spiritual experiences do not occur in the physical world, or should I say, by physical means, they are therefore not scientifically verifiable, and are therefore considered suspect by most people in these last days. Most people don't consider spiritual manifestations real. People that I know tend to believe that people that deal in the supernatural are for the most part, crackpots, or con men or women. The idea that the spiritual reality is as real as the physical universe is not given much consideration.

Anyone that has read my papers before will know that I deal with what the Bible says. I am interested in what the Bible says concerning the spirit realm. I understand and know that the Bible opens to us what the truth is concerning things that we cannot see clearly for ourselves.

When it comes to seeing spiritual things we are all pretty much blind. Our literal eyes see only the things of this creation. For the most part we cannot see angels or other spiritual beings. We cannot look anywhere and see God. The bodies that we inhabit are of this material world and can only sense the material things of the material world, that is to say things made out of matter and energy. Because we aren't sufficiently equipped to see the spirit world we must rely on the Bible to tell us of the truth concerning the spiritual world.

Spiritually we are legally blind. Do you understand what I mean by my saying that we are legally blind? A person that is legally blind can see, but not good enough to say drive a car with or without glasses. A legally blind person can see things, but not clearly and accurately. A legally blind person needs assistance, and by assistance I mean that they need the aid of a person, animal and/or a cane to get around. Now, my point is, is that we are all legally blind when it comes to seeing spiritual things. We all need assistance. What any of us actually sees of the spirit realm is only a glimmer of what there is to see.

The fact that we cannot see clearly into the spiritual reality makes us prime targets for the opportunistic confidence person. Such a person will engineer and/or orchestrate convincing "proofs" of his or her spiritual power or ability. Historically, such deceivers have been quite convincing and quite effective in deceiving the unsuspecting of their 'powers.'

I would like to make it clear that the spiritual world, according to the Bible, is in fact The Reality. What I mean by saying this is that the spirit world is in fact completely real and enduring, in fact, when the physical universe has been long gone the spiritual reality will long endure. The spiritual reality is forever and the physical universe, that is the creation made up out of atoms and energy and such, is only a temporary place. We can safely say that the spiritual world is more real than the 'real' world.

Hebrews 12:25-29

See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens." 27 The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken--that is, created things--so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our 'God is a consuming fire.' (NIV84)

The 'created things' make up what we call the universe. There was a time before the universe existed and there will be a time after the universe. God's point in telling us this Scripture is that we should not focus on the things of this world, because they are temporary, that is, not as real as God's Word, and we should focus on God's Word which lasts forever. My friend, I know that the world looks real, but in the most accurate sense it is not real.

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever. (NIV84)

It is not just the grass and the flowers that wither and fall, but the creation itself. This passage is telling us to look past the world and into God's word.

What I am saying is that the Bible tells us that the spiritual is more real than the physical and therefore we must look to the spiritual for the answers concerning life. But, we cannot see the spiritual world with any degree of clarity, so we must have help. We must have help from someone that we can trust with our very lives. Clearly the one that will tell us the truth is God. My friend if you ask anyone about the spirit realm other than God you are just asking to be lead astray. God is the ONLY one that LOVES you in the spiritual realm. I ask you to stop right now, and think seriously about this. Do you really think that Satan and his spiritual minions love you?

Before I go any further I can see that I need to talk about love first. You, my friend must know that God loves you. You may view God's "instructions" as being oppressive and restrictive, but I can assure you that they are all designed to set you free and open your horizons.

Hebrews 12:4-11

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:

"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."

7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (NIV84)

My friends, you don't have to be a genius to see that every person that lives to indulge in personal erotic pleasures does so at the expense of every meaningful thing in his or her life. Such a person is already dead. There is no lasting meaning to that person's life. If it is your desire to conform to what God expects from you, so as to please God and be received by him as one of his own, then you must live a disciplined life, just as Christ did. God does not expect from you more than he is willing to do. God's interest in you is to bring you to a place of faith, so that in the end you will be with God in heaven. This will not come about if you refuse to respond to discipline. This is not something alien to you. This is not something that you cannot understand. This is exactly what any good parent does to bring up healthy and able children of his or her own. Our desire as parents should be to raise children that they themselves will become good parents that are able to raise productive children of their own. What God expects from you is exactly what you would expect from your own children if you have wisdom. As the Scripture above says, God disciplines every son or daughter that he loves. Would you truly want anything less?

God is love. 1 John 4:16 John tells us that God is love. What is love? This is a very important question. What exactly does it mean to say that God is love? We need a biblical definition of love and God has kindly provided such a definition in the following passage.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. (NIV84)

God is patient and kind. He doesn't envy, or boast and is not proud. God is never rude, self-seeking or easily angered. God does not keep a record of your wrongs (that in itself is pretty comforting). He never delights in evil but instead rejoices with the truth. God will always protect and he cannot fail.

The point that I am trying to make is that God will not lead you astray because he has your interest at heart. There is nothing that you can do for him and you cannot hurt him. His interest in you is purely because of his love for you. There is nothing that God wants for you that is not in your own best interest. I believe that the best definition for love is to have the other person's welfare as being more important than your own.

Do you know what makes Satan evil? Satan was thrown down because he thought that he knew better than God. That's it my friend. It is really as simple as that. God, who is all-powerful and all-knowing, is not self-seeking, and Satan is self-seeking. Satan looked to his own interest as being more important than in interest of others. God has your interest at heart and Satan has his own interest at heart. Love, because it protects and sustains the objects of its love, lasts forever, but self-interest, because it lives at the expense of others will eventually devour everything in its path. This is why, my friend, God had to make the place of isolation. The place was not made a place of torment by God, he simply made a place of isolation so that those that were infected with self-interest couldn't infect and destroy the objects of God's love. The place of isolation will become a place of torment, because that is the natural course of those that follow the doctrine of self-interest. Think of it my friend, do you really want to live forever trapped with people that don't love you? That is, people that will climb over you to get what they want, people that will use you and consume you? I, for one, am very grateful for God's promise of a place where love and selflessness reigns supreme.

So, we see that we live in the world where we are legally blind concerning the Truth. We must receive help if we are ever to 'see' the Truth. We can either listen to people that do not truly love us and claim to know the truth, or we can listen to God who does know the truth, and who also loves us. The Bible is God's Truth revealed to those that will listen to God.

One thing I would like to point out is that God's way is such that there is very little glory for you personally. What I mean by that is that God gets all the credit and we take on the role of humble obedient servant. I mean this quite literally. Satan and his way is about pride and self-importance, and God and his way is about loving the other person.

Psalm 123:2

As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy. (NIV84)

I mention this about having the attitude of a servant so that you might recognize the worthlessness of a prideful attitude toward the source of information that is useful to you in the long run, that is, information that will lead you to God. Satan has offered several methods of obtaining spiritual information, and they generally do not require a submission of your self-importance. They might look good, and they might tickle your fancy, but if they don't end with your Spiritual Life then it is all just smoke and mirrors, whether or not it is "real" or is a scam.

The subject of this paper is where should one go to get the knowledge of the Truth?

The Psychic:

A person that is called a psychic today is either an out-and-out scammer or is being used by spiritual forces that are not of God's camp. The scammers are by far the most prevalent kind of "psychic", but it is my belief that spiritual forces actually genuinely guide some individuals and they can therefore see and know things that are not logically known. This does not mean that you should ever consult even a genuine psychic because even if they are genuine they are not working for God, so to say, and therefore they will not ever lead you to spiritual truth. The warning is; just because a spiritual phenomenon is 'real' doesn't mean that you should listen to it. Only God loves you and only he will guide you to the place of good for YOU. He has only your best interest at heart.

Acts 16:16-18

Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. (NIV84)

The Bible clearly tells us that this slave girl truly had a spirit by which she predicted the future. You might wonder at the reason why Paul commanded the spirit to come out of her. The spirit, after all, was speaking true words, and they would appear to have been beneficial to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. The reason is, is that God does not work through "fortune-tellers" and neither does he charge money for his vision. Clearly it doesn't matter if the "psychic" is a real psychic or not. My friend, I don't care in the least how real the manifestations are, if you follow the advice of a psychic to his or her conclusion, you will end up in the pit, because ultimately he or she wants something from you that is not in your best interest.

To sum up the warning concerning psychics, we can easily see in Scripture that anyone that claims to be a psychic or have ESP powers is not from God and should be avoided at all cost. Such a person might be real, but such a person is NOT from God.

Secret Societies:

Secret societies are not as popular today as they have been in the past but they are still around and they still lead people down the path to destruction. Such societies are called by many different names. Two examples are the Masons, and the Rosicrucians. There are others and as far as God is concerned they are all alike. They all profess secret knowledge regarding spiritual powers and knowledge. The English word that describes their secret knowledge is Mystery or Mysteries.

Exodus 7:8-12

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 9 "When Pharaoh says to you, 'Perform a miracle,' then say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,' and it will become a snake."

10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. (NIV84)

We see in this example that Pharaoh's wise men and sorcerers did have some "secret" knowledge and with it were able to perform what appears to be a miracle. But, from reading this book of the Bible we can see that such "secret" knowledge could not save the Egyptians and it cannot save you either. If you chase after secret knowledge you will share the fate of the Egyptians. It won't matter what level of secret knowledge you attain. The fate of the Egyptians was the same regardless of their level of secret knowledge. I would like to point out that neither Moses nor Aaron understood how the staff became a snake. All they had to know was that they were to do what God told them to do and to have faith in God. Also, I think that it is highly doubtful that Pharaoh's wise men and sorcerers could conger up real live snakes. It is more likely that they either were able to make the image of snakes appear in the minds of the watchers, or there was some form of slay-of-hand--not that it really matters one way or the other. The point is is that magic arts are a dead end street. Those that walk down it only find their own death.

Reincarnation:

I can't tell you how many times I have heard people's theories about reincarnation. The sole source of supporting evidence for this theory is personal experience, that is, people have claimed to remember past lives. The truth is, apart from the Bible there is not a single source of information regarding human spirituality that comes from God. In other words, apart from the Bible there is not a single source of information that we can believe in, with our whole heart's, regarding the human spiritual experience.

Hebrews 9:27-28

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. (NIV84)

This verse makes the truth about the reincarnation theory very clear. A man (or woman) is destined to die ONCE, and after that to face judgment. One life, and then judgment. What the Bible is saying here is that because a man lives only once and then faces judgment, Christ who was judged innocent of sin and then crowned with all power and authority, even authority over death, doesn't have to face judgment again. That is, he will never be born again as a baby, to live another life, because no man (or woman) ever does.

The doctrine of reincarnation is a very dangerous doctrine in that it suggests that if you don't make it this time around then you will be given a second chance. This is simply not true.

Matthew 7:13-14

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (NIV84)

Notice carefully that Jesus doesn't say that those that are on the wide road will have to come back. He says, quite clearly, that they are on the road that leads to destruction. His meaning is clear. You get one chance to do the right thing, so do it and don't be lulled onto the broad road and through the wide gate. My friends, this is a friendly instruction from the Lord. His desire (and mine) is that you forsake all other sources of "knowledge" and listen to him and find life. The Lord himself is your only source of correct information. In this world, more than anything else, you are being tested to see if you will listen to and obey the Word of the Lord. Those people that will listen will be given the "secrets" to the kingdom of God, and those that listen to lying spirits, because those spirits tell them what they want to hear, will be lead down the garden path. There is another side to the error of reincarnation and that is that some contend that they are "old souls" and are therefore qualified to lead you on your way. These people suggest that they "know" and you should listen to them, because they have been around before and are therefore experienced whereas you are a beginner. Well, I am giving you good biblical advice here; do NOT listen to anyone that suggests that he or she is an old soul. Such a person is most definitely NOT from God and will say anything to gain your obedience to them. Such a person has completely deceived himself or herself and can not possibly have anything of value to impart to you. I don't care how dynamic or persuasive that person might be.

Numerology:

The Bible, that is, God, uses numbers to convey certain information to you. Certain numbers have meaning. The number 40, for example, shows up in most trials, that is, Jesus fasted for 40 days as did Moses several times. The rains that fell during the time of Noah fell for 40 days and 40 nights. The children of Israel, because they rebelled against the Word of the Lord, were forced to wander for 40 years in the wilderness. The number three represents God, that is to say, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The number seven signifies completion, that is, there are seven days in a complete week, and there will be seven thousand years before God's whole plan is complete, that is, seven thousand years from Adam to the New Heaven and the New Earth.

Now, my point is, is that some numbers have significance when understanding God's plan, but that doesn't mean that numbers have anything to do with your individual life. There is nothing in the Bible to suggest that numbers mean anything in the life of an individual. The only numbers that have any significance in a person's life span are only significant if their life is a pivotal part of God's plan. The days of Jesus' life were numbered, as were the days of Moses and John the Baptist. The days of God's two witnesses in Revelation chapter 11 are numbered.

These are very special circumstances. My friend, it is very unlikely that your days are numbered. The idea of ordering your life to conform to certain numbers is not in accordance with the truth revealed to us in the Bible. Please don't listen to anyone that suggests that you do so.

Astrology:

There are many people that suggest that your days are ordered in the stars. This is also not true. Some suggest that because Jesus' birth was witnessed in the stars that yours is too. This is very much like the numerology teaching. Pivotal points of God's plan can be known by their numbers, and therefore can be predicted with the stars, but these relate to God's overall plan and do NOT relate to you, or to me.

The Bible does not support the idea that your personality is indicated by the placement of the stars and planets. To believe this is to believe a lie. This lie will never guide you to God. My friend, God intends that the Bible is to be your guide, that is, the Spirit of Truth working with the Bible and in your heart, guiding you into a living growing relationship with God Almighty.

The most destructive idea regarding astrology is the idea that what, or who you are, is predetermined, or that your destiny is predetermined.

Proverbs 9:11

For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. (NIV84)

I ask you my friend, how can days be added to your life if the stars determine your days? This passage is from God. What you do with your days matters. Blaming your life on the stars, or claiming that your destiny was previously ordered, is a way of cheating you out of the relationship that you can have with God. My friend, accept the responsibility for your life, and humbly submit to God. The Bible clearly says that if you humble yourself and accept what God tells you, that is, what is written in the Bible, then God will exalt you and raise you above your brethren.

Conclusion:

Isaiah 47:12-15

Keep on, then, with your magic spells and with your many sorceries, which you have labored at since childhood. Perhaps you will succeed, perhaps you will cause terror. 13 All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. 14 Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Here are no coals to warm anyone; here is no fire to sit by. 15 That is all they can do for you-- these you have labored with and trafficked with since childhood. Each of them goes on in his error; there is not one that can save you. (NIV84)

The sarcasm here is very clear. If you will continue to ignore what God is telling you then, as this passage says, go ahead and see if your beliefs will save you from the Truth. Go ahead and test God in this. See if you are stronger than he is. Go ahead, see if your astrology can save you from the fate that will soon come upon the whole earth. Perhaps you are stronger than God. Perhaps you are wiser than he. Go ahead, and see. But, before you do, please consider what is on the line. God Almighty, who is love, and who owns the game, and establishes all of the rules by his own authority, is offering you a place in his family estate. If, and only if, you don't make the same mistake that Satan made.

Isaiah 14:12-15

How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! 13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." 15 But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit. (NIV84)

O morning star, son of the dawn is the NIV translation of the name Lucifer. This was Satan's name before he fell from his place in heaven. Satan's mistake was that he thought that what he thought, was important. Satan became prideful and thought that he was somebody. My friend, are you guilty of this too? Do you know better than God does? Does what you think have merit when compared to what God has revealed to us?

What God wants from you is for you to humble yourself and acknowledge that God is Lord, and he is the One that knows. God has established that his will is to be known in the earth primarily through the writings of his chosen people, the Israelites. God formed a people from where there was no people--Israel. The world was without an accurate knowledge of God and so he raised up a person that would listen to him, Abram who was later given the name Abraham. God made a 'deal' with that man. He promised Abraham that if he would obey Him, then God would establish him and his descendants forever. This promise was extended to Abraham and anyone else that would submit to God as Abraham did. It was God's intention that through that man, and his descendants, that God would reveal his will in the earth. The Bible is the result of that plan. The Bible is the revealed will of God for anyone that wants to know. To oppose the Bible's teachings is to rebel against God. God uses this analogy: The Bible is Light that shines out into the dark world. The Light makes the Truth visible. To look for truth without the Bible is to be legally blind and stumbling around a strange city with out a guide or a map. The chances of you finding the Truth in its fullness without any Light are very very slight. The chances of you being right when the Bible says something else are nonexistent. The Bible was given to you, because God loves you, and wants you to be his child in truth.

Now my friend, I, that is the writer of this paper, have no agenda other than expressing what the Bible says without personal gain. I receive no earthly payment for what I write. I am not a member of any earthly organization. To put this in earthly terms I can say that I work for God and will receive from him only what he chooses to give to me. I am interested only in helping anyone on his or her way to God.

May you live forever in the City that God has made.

Revelation 22:14-15

Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. (NIV84)

After Thought:

My friend, you should consider just how blessed you are. Many people know nothing about the Word of God; this is not the case for you. You have such an advantage over those that have never heard. You can read the Truth. I can't tell you how many times I have heard the complaint about some remote tribe of aborigines up in the Andes or elsewhere and how they have never heard of Jesus. Well, my friend, what about you? You can't say that you haven't heard about the Bible now. So listen to the truth and make sound biblical decisions.
