“See, it is I who created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work. And it is I who have created the destroyer to work havoc; (NIV84)
The Fall of Satan
“ ‘You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. (NIV84)
This is a picture of Satan before he fell. He was the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. That’s quite an image. To be in Eden, the garden of God, means to be in God’s presence and to receive all the benefits thereof. Just as before man’s fall, man lived in a holy and pure state in the presence of God, in the garden of Eden, so to say.
Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. (NIV84)
Because of Satan’s perfection of beauty he became proud and that led to his corruption. Satan’s view of himself led him to believe in himself over God. That is the heart of all sin. That is the very definition of sin.
How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star [Satan—Lucifer at this time], son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”
15 But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit. (NIV84)
Satan saw himself as not needing God to rule over him. He believed himself capable of choosing his own destiny, and he saw himself as being worthy of leading others; he was perfect in wisdom and beauty after all.
God is Love
1 John 4:8
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (NIV84)
God is love. What is love?
1 Corinthians 13:4–8
Love [God] is patient, love [God] is kind. It [God]does not envy, it [God]does not boast, it [God] is not proud. 5 It [God] is not rude, it [God] is not self-seeking, it [God] is not easily angered, it [God] keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love [God] does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It [God] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love [God] never fails. (NIV84)
The key aspect of love here is that God is not self-seeking. Satan on the other hand became self-seeking. Self-seeking is like spiritual cancer. Self-seeking is a making of yourself to be bigger and to take more than your share because you deserve it, so to say. When a person is self-seeking they take from others for themselves. That is spiritual cancer. When someone is eternal then they cannot be a cancer, the effect is too long. Cancer given time will corrupt the whole organism. Cancer must be removed from the body. It is a must, and so God expelled the infected one out of heaven.
The physical universe is like God’s quarantine tent in heaven. Infected persons can be sent to earth so that they cannot infect the healthy others. Please understand me in that this is a metaphor. Almost everything in the Bible is a metaphor. If an infected person dies while in quarantine their body will be burnt, again to prevent infecting others. But, on the other hand, if a quarantined person gets better they will be reinstated with the healthy living.
The illness that infects is a spiritual thing—pride/sin/self. People while they live in the quarantine place, earth, are instructed by God concerning sin and those that believe God respond to instruction and can be cured of the spiritual disease, self. Again, please understand that I am talking about the salvation of your spirit person, your soul, the real you that lives hidden inside. The real you is not your brain nor is it your body, but is an almost undefinable conscious person. Ironically, it is the part of you that defines your self. The ironic part is that this self-defining part of you must not become self-centered. It is the part of you that truly makes you you, but it is also the part of you that is designed to be motivated by love which is a sort of self anti-self.
Fall of Man
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. (NIV84)
Now, when you read this you must understand that Satan is a liar. Everything he says has some subtle erroneous slant on it. Satan deceived the woman into disobeying God so that she could become more like God. She figured that being more like God was a good thing and so she disobeyed God.
What is going on here is very subtle. Satan fell because he was perfect in wisdom and beauty before he fell, and yet he was only an anointed cherub (angel). Man had been created in the image and likeness of God himself. Man was created to be much more capable than Satan ever was. It was inevitable that man would become proud and fall. It was a guaranteed thing. God knew this, but God still wanted to make children for himself, so God planned ahead for the fall of man. Actually God planned ahead for this eventuality in that he made Satan, so perfect as an angel, knowing that he would fall first, and would become the catalyst for man’s fall. I have heard several times people complaining about Satan and the fall of man. They can’t understand why God would have allowed it. But, it was necessary. Man was going to fall and suffer as a result, so God planned for this fall ahead of time so that the time of suffering might be much shorter. Satan and his ability to see the spiritual things much better than man is able to move things along at a very much accelerated rate. God put man into human bodies so that he couldn’t effectively see his beauty, and so this helps limit man’s self pride. This allows man to see the effect of sin and come to understand that it must be avoided at all cost.
Now, for you people that want to complain about man’s suffering because of Satan, consider this next passage.
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. (NIV84)
If you will just resist temptation and submit yourselves to God, the Devil will run away from you in fear. The Devil can’t make you do anything. God’s desire is for you to come to him and repent of your selfish ways. Embrace the way of love and service. Humble yourselves and God will elevate you. I don’t know if you have experienced this but whenever I have submitted myself to God and performed some selfless act of charity I have perceived a welling up of joy within me. I was made to be one with God and when I get where I am supposed to be it is wonderful. Satan will always lead you toward some selfish act. He will goad you into thinking that you deserve something or other. Don’t listen. All you have to do is open your eyes and look around at the world and you can see the effect of self—it’s horrible. Self leads to death and dead things molder painfully into nothingness. Physical death is a metaphor for spiritual death. Spiritually dead things suffer. Spiritually alive things are filled with …
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. (NIV84)
