1 Timothy 1:5
The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. (NIV84)

The Bible’s goal is to guide you up the path of Selfless Love. God is Selfless Love[1 John 4:16], and our goal is to become like him.

1 Corinthians 13:4–7
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (NIV84)

Here, the Bible gives us the very definition of Selfless Love. Read this passage carefully and deeply. Meditate upon it. Drink it in and let it water your soul. Take special note of the Selfless nature of Love as it is defined here. Take deliberate note of the fact that each aspect of Selfless Love, as described above, has its focus for the betterment of the other person, not on yourself. This is the true nature of God Almighty, and this is God’s goal for you. Selflessness. Selfless Love.

Philippians 2:5–11
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NIV84)

Jesus Christ is without doubt the greatest man that ever lived. The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is in fact the Creator of the physical universe, the earth and every living thing on it [John 1:3; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2]. Jesus Christ is the very image of the invisible God [Colossians 1:15]. Jesus Christ, The Selfless One, lived with a total focus on persons other than himself. He was and is the embodiment of Selfless Love, and as this passage above instructs us, our attitude should be the same as his.

Do you know what a true Christian is? It is a person that has died to the world of sin, and has laid themselves before God Almighty as an offering.

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ [Selfless Love] lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (NIV84)

What this is saying is that as a Christian we have laid our will to rest, and have taken God’s will of Selfless Love upon ourselves. We have become Selfless servants of God, expressing God’s Selfless Love in a selfish world. I do not personally claim to have arrived at this Selfless state of obedience, but as the opening Scripture says, (1 Timothy 1:5) this is our goal, as it is God’s goal for us. Each day I press on to defer my will to God’s will. I never give up, I never look back, I never hope for myself anything other than perfect obedience to Selfless Love. My personal goal is to have God’s will of Selfless Love as my own. I hope that one day selfishness will be so far behind me that I can’t even remember it.

This is my greatest desire: That the eyes of my heart may be enlightened in order that I may know the hope to which he has called me, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. Ephesians 1:18–19

  1. To give oneself for the benefit others is the ultimate act of selfless love. To lay your life before the Creator and to walk in obedience against what your flesh desires IS true Love for God above self. We are not here to please ourselves, but rather to do all that God has called us to do. God has called us to lay aside the sinful desires of the flesh and to become a servant to Him, which in return makes us a servant to those around us… Even to though who might mistreat us. We do these things to show the love of Jesus because we know there is no other Way!

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24 (NIV)
